Yup. This ain't a Herbert problem. It's a defense problem. We do not really have a defense. This is Air Coryell on O and Tom Bass on D. Or closer to it.

I agree that the coaching makes a big difference, but IMO Tua is flat out the better QB regardless.

I don't think any GM in the league would take Tua over Herbert. Including theirs.

I think this is easily a ten plus loss team without Herbert the last couple of years. The defense has been bad the last 2 plus seasons and the Qb has done more than his fair share for this team.

Tua is in a different risk category given what happened to him last year, but you could honestly say that about any NFL player (one injury away, etc). I don't think that's fair to count that as a negative towards him IMO.

You don't? Why do you think they didn't give him an extension this year? He hasn't played a full season yet and last year was his worst as far as injuries go because it was his head.

Spanos are career killers. They waste great players careers by hiring inferior HCs and a mediocre GM.

The 'measurable' that I have Tua better than Herbert is a quicker release.

Whatever their respective release times (which may be more a product of scheme than ability) here's what happened today:

Tua and the Dolphins are looking like the 1999 St. Louis Rams right now, but we'll see how long it lasts.

That's because nobody really knew how good Herbert was when he was being coached poorly at Oregon. If he had played at Georgia, Michigan, or Ohio State he would have been drafted second overall by Washington, maybe first by Cincinnati.

And for the record...please don't mistake my criticisms of Herbert as hating on the guy or rooting against him to succeed. I WANT him to do well. Decades of Chargers football have left me jaded and quite frankly barring an ownership change, the level of play we need from the team (mainly QB) has to be so far and above beyond greatness to overcome organizational dysfunction that it's almost unfair to the players.

I think that's a good description of Herbert's career up to this point. If any Qb has to play hero ball practically every week they are bound to come up short sometimes no matter how good they are.

A team with a strong defense and explosive YAC playmakers on offense can do wonders for a Qb's stat line and W/L record.

Tua was seen as a fragile bust before McDaniels assembled a track team that can play around him. I just watched Hurts go 23-37 with 1 TD and 2 Int's and still win by 2 TD's because their defense is so good.

I don't think either of those Qb's are more talented than Herbert or would outperform him playing on the Chargers.
