The San Diego Chargers on Saturday placed Melvin Ingram on the “Reserve-Injured” list with the designation to return after suffering a hip injury. Teams are only allowed to place one player a season on the list, so the Chargers will not be able to use the exemption for the remainder of 2014.
Instituted in 2012, the rule allows a player expected to miss an extended period of time the possibility to return to action instead of missing the entire season. The player cannot return to practice until six weeks have passed from the date he was placed on the list, and he is not eligible to return to a game for at least eight weeks.
As such, the soonest Ingram could possibly play in a game would be Week 11 against the Oakland Raiders. Since the Chargers have a Week 10 bye, the third-year veteran will miss a minimum of seven games. No corresponding move has been announced.
