I think just about everyone was wrong on him. I did not have want him over Herbert, but I thought he'd be a stud.

And even though he only cost a 7th round pick - his salary is also 3.4m - -so another 2.6m against the cap - plus he hasn't been that good to warrant that kind of pay

It's kind of funny to see some of the reaction from vocal 49er fans on Twitter/X. They are convinced the team is making a horrible mistake and he should be the starter and Shanahan is an idiot.

3 of the 4 final teams last year have top 5 QBs. None of those 3 had a top RB. They had good RBs but not the elite top tier that wants to get paid. the fourth semifinalist had the best defense and a surprisingly and magically effective Mr irrelevant. When they lost Mr I, it was over for them.

Note that 4th team SF didn’t face an elite QB in the playoffs they won until they played Philly. Philly probably beats them anyway but once SF lost their QBs it was over hard and fast and became a sad laugher before halftime. Despite having a great defense and a good run game.

so its not impossible to win without a top QB, and everyone can cherry pick any example of any “thing” they want to prove. But the trend is the fact and it’s improbable to win it all without a top QB/pass game and its becoming more so with each year. RBs are not showing to be as important in this equation. There is a velocity delta that gives the best pass teams the advantage now. Top defense is not showing as critical as it used to be. Top D/Rush team can play tough for 45 minutes and elite Pass team can erase it in 15 min. Therein lies the RB salary decisions.

Good point there, Dmac. I'm guessing the analytics specialists from NFL teams ALSO plug THAT variable into their offer sheets to extend (or not extend) contracts for RB's...

Yep...reportedly Darnold was originally signed as insurance in case Purdy's injury rehab wasn't progressing, and to back up Lance. Then, in TC, Darnold beat out Lance. Now it looks like Lance is taking his demotion pretty hard:

After being demoted all the way to the third-string quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Trey Lance was conspicuously absent from training camp today. His head coach explained why.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Shanahan explained that the team made the decision to give Lance the day off to clear his head. He said that he felt Lance needed to take some time off and would be feeling better tomorrow.

"Watching how Trey was when he talked, we just thought it was better, 'Hey, take the day off, get away a little bit. Clear your head some. We'll talk later in the afternoon and we'll get you back in here tomorrow,'" Shanahan said, via The Athletic's David Lombardi.

Lance finds himself in a very difficult situation on the team right now. After being demoted to third string it seems clear that he has no future in San Francisco.

I'll tell you what, if the Chargers had to turn to a back up QB even for a game or two, I'd much rather have Trey Lance than either Stick or Duggan. If the 49ers would take a low round pick for Lance, I'd pull the trigger on that, bring Trey in here where he would be the undisputed QB2 behind Herbert and send Duggan to the PS and Stick packing.

I’m OK with that. Most teams still carry 3 QB’s tho. It’d be nice if the Chargers carried other than unproven 5th and 6th round backup QB’s. Jeesh! Better teams sign a legit backup QB to propel them, should the worst happen. With the Chargers, it’s “He’ll not go down, trust us.”

Just a few years ago there were a lot of posters here upset that Telesco drafted Herbert instead of Simmons. So many fans here were convinced Simmons was the answer to the defense's woes. lol

The Chargers signed a FA linebacker when Simmons was available for almost nothing, what does that say? Does this mean Kenneth Murray is actually better than Simmons?

Telesco takes plenty of heat on this board for his draft decisions, sometimes deservedly but very often not deserved. He deserves some praise for his 2020 1st round draft decisions.

Wow...a 7th! And yes, there were many here (myself included) who would not have been sad if we had chosen Simmons over Herbie. The Cards are just dumping core as they approach a lost season. I suspect that even Murray might be dangled out there at some point.
