The AT&T merger is partly contingent on DirecTV's contract renewal with the NFL, but its starting to look like that renewal is just a formality.
Yeah, when I lived in the States, I switched to DirecTV at the first opportunity, even before I realised they offered Sunday Ticket. I was just so pissed off at cable companies. Because cable companies essentially run monopolies, they could jerk customers around as they saw fit, and I often suffered for that. Particularly, they often would have an outage around 2, 3, or 4 am, which, because I worked the midnight shift at a couple of police stations, was precisely when I wanted to watch a bit of telly on my nights off. I couldn't wait to ditch cable. The only outages I ever had with DirecTV were during torrential rain or blizzards (and I do mean the weather had to be extreme, almost Biblical).

Perhaps cable companies have improved, as I understand there is now competition in some areas. One of the nice things about British TV is that I have a choice, so if any one provider jerks me around I can switch to a competitor. Monopolies are seldom good.

I've loved DirecTV. The reception's been great, love the Ticket, love the interface and the customer service has been among the best I've had in any area. Up there with AMEX.

If it allows AirPlay from iOS devices, I'm in.

              How could they restrict that?

The BIG issue IMO is how they stop multiple devices using the same login info to share the streams. (aka the issue with Netflix).

I wouldnt pay $199 to watch it on my phone anyways. I dont see how that is a good thing. Maybe for $99 if it isnt as bad as RTP says it was.

If they allowed multiple simultaneous logins, what's to stop you from sharing out your login with friends and family (meaning they don't have to purchase their own subscription)?

The iOS app itself might not feature/cripple AirPlay - example: the HBOGo app only did audio via AirPlay for a while (nonsense). I can't imagine why they wouldn't choose to do so, but it's hard to explain the choices of these providers/developers.
