    RIP Wilbur Young

    Jay Posner @sdutPosner
Sorry to hear ex-Charger (78-82) DE Wilbur Young has died at 65. Sad he'll be forever recalled for crucial penalty in AFC title loss to Oak.

I recall him as a big man that was a key to our awesome pass rush when we had a semblance of defense. He'll be missed.

When I started watching the Chargers I collected cards and one was of Gary "Big Hands" and he became one of my favorite players, probably because he had a nickname. Gary was getting death threats and was sick for the game(probably because of threats) and Wilbur replaced him I believe and cost the Chargers a chance to either win or get the ball again to mount a drive.

Wilbur was a very good player. Giant man for those times. I first liked him as a kid because he wore 99 and there weren't too many 99s back then. I refuse to remember him by one play. And shame on Posner for even bringing it up.

Besides even after his offsides in that playoff game, there were still 6 or 7 minutes left in that game. He is not the reason they lost. The Chargers were also down big in the first half. That was not all Wilbur's fault either.

I know it is an off time, but NOTHING in the UT about Wilbur Young? Nothing? I guess it is too much trouble for them to write a little piece about a guy from the probably the best era in Chargers football. Would take too much effort. Easier just to tweeter something negative.

I thought it was 2 minutes left in the game.

I am going from memory and that was a long time ago. Maybe someone not as lazy as me can look it up, if that stuff even exists to help clear Wilbur's name? I do remember Wilbur had a habit of jumping the snap and he did get called a fair amount for offsides in his career. And I think the 80 AFC championship was his last game as a Charger, no?

And the Chargers were down by at least 3 touchdowns early on in that game. Cannot just blame one guy for losing.

At least Chargers.com has acknowledged Wilbur's passing.

                  Jay Posner:
Wilbur's penalty was for offside. He was cut in '83 & the great Jerry Magee wrote: "This time when Wilbur Young moved, there was no flag."

Offense that game took a while to warm up. But, once it did, the Raiders defense, as evil and as dirty and as cheateresque as it was, had no chance to stop Air Coryell. Nobody could stop that offense when Fouts's arm was on point.
