    Block Reich from interviews?

    cbssports:

Candidates for offensive and defensive coordinator positions who are not contractually bound to another team have a distinct advantage.

In an era when NFL teams have made a habit of blocking top assistants for coordinator jobs, other coaches who were either out of the league last season or who have expiring contracts could be well positioned to fill any openings.

As head coaches begin to get hired, the task turns to finding the right staff. Many position coaches who might be coveted as coordinators -- Chargers quarterback coach Frank Reich or Eagles quarterback coach Bill Lazor, for example -- might not be allowed to leave. San Diego in particular covets Reich as the replacement for offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, who was asked to interview for four jobs.

However, Packers quarterback coach Ben McAdoo, whose deal is up, is expected to be a top candidate for the Dolphins coordinator opening, and he could interview for the Giants' coordinator vacancy as well. Longtime former coordinators Ed Donatell and Gregg Williams, whose deal is expiring with the Titans, are well positioned (Williams could get consideration for the Titans' head coaching vacancy). So are Browns coordinators Norv Turner and Ray Horton, who are free to pursue other jobs. Former Bills head coach Dick Jauron, who led the Browns' defense in 2012, could also be in the mix somewhere.

In many ways it is more difficult to get premier coordinators than it is to get head-coaching candidates, given how frequently teams block assistants from interviewing, but it remains a crucial part of the process.

IMO it is a no-brainier that we block him from interviewing. He will be our OC next season.

I don't think he'll be upset if TT tells him that he's our OC next year. Why would he want to go anywhere else?

Maybe, but staying with us seems like a better move. Playoff team, he knows the staff and players and already has a relationship the QB who's a stud. We seem ideal.

I think it is dangerous to start blocking assistants who might want to leave. If a team gets a rep for not allowing coaches to move around, then you get that rep and good coaches will think twice about ever signing a contract with you.

The teams don't offer the coaches much job security, so why should the coaches feel that much loyalty to a team which might block their best chance at landing a job their really want? Most assistant coaches have a limited shelf life, and many very good coaches have missed chances to get head coaching and coordinator spots because they weren't allowed to move. Then the teams fortunes change and they get passed over for the new whiz kids and have to wait years for the teams to rise again, or get bounce from struggling franchise to struggling franchise.

The way to make sure you keep the best possible staff is to make sure that the owner and GM make the best possible contract offers to the assistants, so that money is not the driving force behind assistant coaches wanting to leave, and then just be really honest with the coaches about their prospects for advancement inside the organization. If the assistant doesn't like it, most will still respect the honesty. But forcing a coach to stay when their shot at rising is not going to win you a coaches best efforts down the road.

didn't stop McCoy, Whiz, and Reich signing with us....or any other coach/staff we've hired. and it's a leaguewide thing since....forever or so.

I see your point but this is different and much like the Marty fiasco. If Whiz leaves we want Reich to be OC, or so it appears, so we block the guy only because we want to promote him. I think you have to block a coach in a situation like this where you are facing a brain drain at your top spots on offense or defense. In Reich's case we aren't preventing his chance, because if the reports are right we are going to give him that job. Unless he hates it here I don't see the problem, in which case I doubt the team would block him anyway.
