Boltimore, it was 4th and 2 from fairly deep in our own end. It was short snap to Weddle and he ran into the line into a pile right at the 30 (where he needed to reach to get a first down). In the process, his helmet came off and he may have been ruled down, but our guys appeared to push him forward past the 30 and a KC player took the ball and ran away from the pile and down the sideline for what looked for a second like it might be a KC TD. But the play was called dead and the ball was miraculously spotted with the nose of the ball just touching the 30 yard line. First down was signaled with no measurement because at that location no measurement is required as it was first down from a touchback at the beginning of the series. They showed Reid chirping on the sideline, but there was no booth review. Even if there had been a review, Weddle was in the middle of a big pile, so I am not sure what anyone could have seen.

As soon as I saw it was a fake and I saw Weddle running towards the middle of the line, my stomach went tight as ever. I didn't think Weddle was going to make the first down, and our season would end there. But the pile kept moving forward like a rugby maul. Then suddenly a Chiefs's player emerges with the ball and runs into the endzone, and we've lost the game. But suddenly they're saying the ball was down. So I think we'll measure and it'll be close. But Levy announced San Diego has reached the line of gain and it's a first down. I couldn't believe it. They showed a replay and I thought, Oh Shit, Weddle's knee was never down; this will get overturned. But there was never a replay, and never an explanation. Watching the replay again I could see Weddle's helmet came off, but it's not clear whether the helmet came off before the ball was lost or not. Either way, Reid looked incredulous and was asking for a replay, and the Chargers drove down the field with some hard-nosed running from Mathews and kicked the game-winning FG.Adipose
