Alworth, Jim Brown, and who else?

I was just looking at the QB receivers thread that Stinky created, and one of the posts said that anything with Alworth was a winner. And that got me to thinking: Alworth was truly way beyond his generation, and there's been few like him since. The other player that strikes me the same way is Jim Brown. Truly a man among boys of his generation. If you need corroboration, just watch his clips on YouTube. The question is: Are there other players that stand out like those two guys? I mean way ahead of their generation; heads, shoulders, torsos, etc. above all others? I'm talking NFL, not just Chargers and not just modern day players.

It's tough at MLB, but Dick Butkus may be the best ever at that position.

Johnny Unitas. In a lot of ways, the prototype of the modern era QB.

Bo Jackson. Charger fans are lucky he did not play long. An absolutely phenomenal physical talent. Unbelievable speed, power, balance, vision. A true man among boys and would be today, too.

Yes. Pound for pound I would take Jack Lambert. But ststraiht up its Butkus all the way. Lambert played at about 210, never lifted a weight and smoked!

I was thinking the same thing about Bo Jackson. Had he only played football and not had a career-ending injury, who knows what he might have been able to do. A rare combination of physical talents.

Steroids. And he ended up with one of its complications. Necrosis of the hip.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

YES...Johnny U.... there were great quarterbacks before him but he really was the transitional piece to the modern era
