Seriously, not many of us liked that specific play calling. Because we don't like it does not make it dumb, idiotic, or lacking in strategic validation and reasoning.
Sure calling it idiotic and dumb and a total failure of strategy might be an extreme way to put it but basically everyone (the vast majority) are basically saying the same thing. It's the same sentiment.
The disaster avoided that we were so afraid of is maybe a pick 6 at worse. If that happened we would have the ball with 2 timeouts in better field position down 7. Decent shot at a field goal to pull with in 4.
Instead we went down 3 and were fortunate not to give up 7 with no time left to answer.
Worst case with run punt strategy we chose was worse and more likely than the worst case if we attempt to pick up a first down
McCoys decision was lose lose and has no valid strategical value. It was a mistake.migrated from chargerfans.net then the thenflforum.com then here

It was a bad idea and it did not work.
One thing wrong with your argument is the idea that McCoy wasn't trying to get a first down. We averaged 4.9 yards per rush for the game so it's not like it would be out of the question that 3 runs would get a first down. And Mathews did bust off a 7 yard gain on first down that was called back by penalty. It's not like McCoy had Rivers kneel down 3 times.
