Bill Walsh won games with Matt Cavanaugh and Jeff Kemp in San Francisco. Cavanaugh won a game he started in Philadelphia during the 49ers' Super Bowl season in 1984. Kemp went 3-2-1 while starting in place for an injured Joe Montana in 1986. The 49ers then got Steve Young (we all know his story) and Steve Bono, who went 5-1 as Young's backup in 1991. Elvis Grbac went a combined 6-3 as Young's backup in 1995 and 1996.

Steve Fuller went 4-1 while starting for an injured Jim McMahon during the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl season in 1985. Mike Tomczak went 7-0 while starting for an injured McMahon during the Bears' 14-2 season in 1986.

Belichick went 11-5 with Matt Cassel in 2008, and 3-1 with Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett during the Patriots' Super Bowl season in 2016

Andy Reid went 5-1 with A.J. Feeley and Koy Detmer in 2002 on the way to the NFC Championship Game. Reid went 5-1 with Jeff Garcia replacing an injured Donovan McNabb in 2006.

The 2002 Buccaneers went 2-0 with Rob Johnson starting in place for an injured Brad Johnson during their Super Bowl season.

The 2015 Denver Broncos went 5-2 with Brock Osweiler starting for an injured Peyton Manning during their Super Bowl season in 2015.

Sean Payton went 5-0 with Teddy Bridgewater in 2019 and 3-1 with Taysom Hill in 2020.

There are plenty more examples, so it is not even close to impossible to find a competent backup. We don't have to throw our hands up and say, "The season's over if Justin Herbert goes down, so we may as well not even try to upgrade from Easton Stick."

Can't disagree more. Jeff Hostetler and Nick Foles won Super Bowls as backups. Earl Morrall kept the 1972 Dolphins on the path to the Super Bowl. Bubby Brister stepped in and went 4-0 when John Elway pulled a hamstring on the way to the 1998 Broncos winning the Super Bowl. Frank Reich was an excellent backup in Buffalo, winning two playoff games in 1992 to get the Bills back into the Super Bowl. Steve Buerlein won a playoff game for the Dallas Cowboys in 1991. There are plenty of examples. That is the type of backup quarterback we should strive for. Not Easton Stick.

Additionally, practice and camp time has been reduced in the CBA, so backup QBs are getting fewer snaps and are less well prepared. Also, as has been pointed out, even 20 more examples is still a very small fraction of teams that have had their QB go down. I largely agree that if Herbert goes down this team is screwed anyway. That being said. Easton Stick is garbage and can be improved upon. We can get a QB who can be better easily. The only downside is if it pisses of Herbert, but he seemed to be fine with them moving on from Chase Daniel, who he also seemed to like.

There are plenty of examples I listed in the salary cap era in the next post I made. In addition to the examples I already gave, San Francisco had Jimmy Garoppolo and Brock Purdy backing up Trey Lance during their NFC Championship Game season in 2021, Ryan Fitzpatrick was #2 behind Tua in Miami in 2020, and last season the Browns made the playoffs with Joe Flacco and the Colts nearly made the postseason with Gardner Minshew.

I can still feel the quake of you slamming that door shut. Check and Mate, good sir, well played. The debate is silly, Stick is not good. I would bet without looking I would eagerly trade him straight up for the #2 on more than 20, and possible all 31, other teams today.

Titans running back Hassan Haskins had an aggravated assault by strangulation charge against him dismissed last week, Terry McCormick of titaninsider.com reports.

Haskins was arrested June 29 after a pair of violent arguments with his girlfriend, Makiah Green. She still faces charges of aggravated assault by strangulation, vandalism over $2,500 and assault with a deadly weapon in one of the incidents.

Haskins, a fourth-round pick in 2022, played 15 games as a rookie and had 36 touches for 150 yards.

The Titans placed him on injured reserve Aug. 28, ending his 2023 season. A day later, the NFL placed him on the Commissioner Exempt List. The league removed him from the list this week.

Haskins will spend this season rehabbing his undisclosed injury.
