its actually top 51. And top 51 counts from the beginning of the league year through training camp. But when the regular season comes around - its all included - the 53 man roster, the practice squad and IR.

not sure how they got to 20.8 unless they are already considering the Linsley retirement into that, but his paperwork won't be filed until June 1st so that money doesn't come off the books until then...

and in all reality, Linsley is basically at most a net savings to the cap of 400k when all is said and done
not the 1.26m - they have to pay somebody on the roster

At that point - they can operate the league year:

Priority #2: What do with Mack, Bosa and MW. If they release MW and June 1, Bosa, they are now $43m under the cap without touching Mack, Herbert or James.

43m under would leave about $25m in free agency without pushing anymore money to the future

IF, you still need money, you can always circle back to James and Herbert but I am not sure the chargers will be big players in free agency. Too many holes to fill

As I said earlier - if I am keeping both Mack and Allen, with the new money, I am only extending Allen, letting Mack play out his contract.
so they won't go after anyone in FA? if like you said they get that much from a KA extension, why wouldn't they want another 13mil from restructuring James and Herbert? or another like 15mil from pushing 11mil in dead money on Mack? if they are managing 25mil in dead money this season why are we so terrified of doing less than half that in 2025 when the cap is going up another 30 plus million?

they are going to need a bit of money to keep Gilman, maybe resign Everett, and to go after a veteran Center...there just too many holes on the roster to try and fill them all in this one draft...

even if you push 11mil in dead space for Mack into 2025 you are still getting a net gain of 14mil in cap space in 2025 and Mack can hit FA next year and bring us a decent comp in 2026...

Herbert's cap hit is only $19M this year, how much juice you trying to squeeze from that lime? his cap jumps to $37M in '25, $46M '26, $58 '27, peaks at $71M in '28.

I'm not a capologist but 2024 doesn't feel like the time to push Herbert cap ... 2026 is where they might restructure his cap and extend again?

Mahomes cap hit in 2024 is $59M for comparison, and stays at ~$60M for the next 4 years.

Just move on, there’s nothing to see here.

We are going to be highly competitive this year.
No more restructuring of old guys please 🙏
Besides the fact that MW and Mack are on their last year and can’t be restructured.

Keep reading, MW is an expected cut in the next few days. FWIW.

Above I mentioned having $25m in free agency - you can do a lot with $25m: Safety + BackupQB + LB + IDL + TE + Center + RB - - for the right players, the Chargers can hit all of these for $25m of NET cap space

Second, I am not pushing cap unless I need to push cap. Granted, the dollars roll over but why create cap dollars unless you need to use the dollars.

Regarding Mack - if the right player comes along, sure - I can rework his contract, give him void years - but truly, if you are signing Mack for one year - let him go now and sign somebody that you are signing for the future., not just one year

Lastly, yhou have just pushed a shit load of cap to 2025 and beyond - serious question - won't you want the money in a year or two when they might actually be in position to win a Super Bowl and not compete for the 7th spot in the AFC

they can get almost 6mil from restructuring Herbert, it's peanuts in terms of pushing money into the future, but this year? this year 6mil is important to this team, you can potentially keep Gilman with that on a 3 year deal...this year 6mil is important and it means diddly in terms of pushing money into the future...I'll be surprised if they don't do it...

The base salary and bonus can be restrructed - but not the "amortized dead cap"

But what about 2025-2029 when the team will be better?
