Yeah, I get it (with Bosa and MW). Get whatever you can with those two. If you can't get anything in trade for them... cut them anyways. They save $34 million against the cap... whether you trade them or cut them. A lousy team, with a lot of cap space, could be willing to take a risk on them. It's not like most 4th rounders make an impact anyways. When those guys are healthy, they impact a game.
Mack and Keenan are the only players doing anything on a consistent basis. I'd keep them. Extending them saves more cap money. People have been telling me that Keenan is "slowing down" for a couple of years now. How did he respond...? By having his best year yet. IMO, Mack and Keenan have another 2 or 3 years left.
If we're drafting in the Top-10... I'm going CB, Edge rusher, or even OT. Those are the premium positions. Taking a TE just doesn't make sense to me. Most of the TE's taken in the 1st just haven't provided a ROI. The exception might be Hockenson... and even he was traded before his rookie contract was up. Our CB starters are junk. You really need 3 edge rushers now... especially if Mack is retained. Rotate them and keep them fresh. Protect yourself against injury. Pipkins is crap. Most raved about his re-signing. I was against re-signing him. He's not very good... and obviously can't protect well enough to keep your QB healthy or allow enough time to pass deep. That re-sign was a waste of money.
I have changed my mind on Mack. If there is a new GM/HC combo - they are going to need to do a pretty big rebuild. I think I would look into trading Mack and using his 15m of cap space on multiple players. See if you can get some building blocks. At worst just some rotational depth. I get one player won't be better than Mack - but maybe between the hopefully two draft picks and a few shrewd free agent signings - you can build a better roster.
QB Herbo * like Joe Milton in the draft
RB * empty house/nest.... need to bring in a handful of 'em (Daijun Edwards pls)
WR Keenan, Palmer, QJ, Derius Davis * need a WR5
TE Everett, Parham, Vannett * personally would replace Stoney
OT Slater, Salyer, Pips * Taliese is tempting
OG Zion, McFadden * Cooper Beebe would make a nice addition
OC * looking in FA if not the draft
NT Ogbonnia * T'Vondre Sweat pls
DT Matlock * Byron Murphy pls
DE Tuli, Fox * Tuimoloau went back to school
ED Mack * Dorance Armstrong would be my choice in FA if not Latu in the draft
LB Murray, Henley * Cedric Gray pls plus one more (Eric Gentry) in the draft
SS Derwin, Alohi * good for now
FS JT Woods * Cole Bishop pls
CB Asante, Deane, Ja'Sir, Mike D. * am looking slot corner in FA (to spell Callahan)
Does anyone on here think Mack could still retire this year? He was rumored to be contemplating retirement last season. If he does that is a huge loss on defense. If so who could we sign in free agency or draft to fill that void?
Our cap situation compells us to patiently invest one more season in allowing young players to develop.
My "realistic"roster build will involve retaining thus far underperforming Chargers, re-upping with some vets looking to have bounce back years, and late, late UFAs to fill in the gaps.
It will all be on the cheap...coupon god's back in town.
I posted this over on the other thread... but I think this thread is about to take off again...
If we could trade back to #10... we'd pick up at least one 3rd rounder and two 4th rounders... maybe another future 4th.
If you can trade Mack away for a 3rd rounder (IMO the only player on the Chargers that could get that value)... then you have a 1st rounder, a 2nd round, three 3rd rounders, three 4th rounders...
1st: CB Kool-Aid
2nd: C Sedrick Van Pran
3rd: DL Kris Jenkins
3rd: LB Junior Colson
3rd: Best DE available
4th: Best RG available
4th: Best TE available
4th: Best RB available
You're nearly done with your rebuild in one draft... simply by trading back 5 spots in the 1st round.
First order of business is getting under the cap by March 13th.
Cuts: Linsley, Kendricks, Mike Williams
Restructures: Bosa, Derwin
Extension: Keenan
ERFA signings: Sarell, Dicker, Layne, Doss
At this point, I am $13.5m under the cap... and have 50 players on the roster.
Second order of business would be to trade Khalil Mack (hopefully a 3rd rounder).
At this point, I am $36.8m under the cap... with 49 on the roster and 8 draft picks (two 3rd rounders) to re-build.
