After seeing the managerial styles of several head coaches over the years, which traits or characteristics do you value most in a HC? If I was giving a brief analysis of the plusses and minuses of our coaches over the years, here's what it would be:
Staley: Too inexperienced to be a HC. Rode the coattails of McVey and excellent Ram talent to be #1 defense. Too much of a risk-taker with going for it on 4th down, and passing up on figgies. His Pattern-Match Defense, a hybrid of press and zone D, was apparently asking our D players too much to process and led to too many breakdowns.
Lynn: Hired reportedly because he impressed TT and Johnboy in the interview as a tough, take-charge guy. Kind of the antithesis of Milquetoast Mikey. Unfortunately, Lynn, like Staley, was underqualified for the job. Too many run calls when the ground game wasn't there. Horrible game-day decisions, especially his final year. Allowed Gus Bradley to use ineffective picket fence prevent D too many times.
McCoy: Hired for his offensive mind, but apparently never gained the respect of the players. Too many missed tackles and fumbles, and apparently didn't hold players accountable.
Norv: Too many up the gut for nada calls, when he had Rivers, one of the top QB's in the league. Turner also benefited from having a talented roster with 11 Pro Bowlers, including LT, a mostly solid O-line and some real playmakers on D. To his credit, at least Norv did lead the Bolts to three 1st place division titles, the playoffs and the AFC Championship game in 2007, which the Chargers lost to the Cheatriots. In that game, Rivers played with a torn ACL and LT was injured early.
Marty: Solid, take charge coach who had the respect of the players. Marty's main weaknesses were his penchant for playing "Martyball"--going conservative when we barely had a slim lead. Needed to keep the pedal on the metal. He also made a few poor game decisions. I still think he deserved another year at least, after taking the team to 14-2.
