POLL: Which Traits do you Value Most in a Head Coach?

After seeing the managerial styles of several head coaches over the years, which traits or characteristics do you value most in a HC? If I was giving a brief analysis of the plusses and minuses of our coaches over the years, here's what it would be:

Staley: Too inexperienced to be a HC. Rode the coattails of McVey and excellent Ram talent to be #1 defense. Too much of a risk-taker with going for it on 4th down, and passing up on figgies. His Pattern-Match Defense, a hybrid of press and zone D, was apparently asking our D players too much to process and led to too many breakdowns.

Lynn: Hired reportedly because he impressed TT and Johnboy in the interview as a tough, take-charge guy. Kind of the antithesis of Milquetoast Mikey. Unfortunately, Lynn, like Staley, was underqualified for the job. Too many run calls when the ground game wasn't there. Horrible game-day decisions, especially his final year. Allowed Gus Bradley to use ineffective picket fence prevent D too many times.

McCoy: Hired for his offensive mind, but apparently never gained the respect of the players. Too many missed tackles and fumbles, and apparently didn't hold players accountable.

Norv: Too many up the gut for nada calls, when he had Rivers, one of the top QB's in the league. Turner also benefited from having a talented roster with 11 Pro Bowlers, including LT, a mostly solid O-line and some real playmakers on D. To his credit, at least Norv did lead the Bolts to three 1st place division titles, the playoffs and the AFC Championship game in 2007, which the Chargers lost to the Cheatriots. In that game, Rivers played with a torn ACL and LT was injured early.

Marty: Solid, take charge coach who had the respect of the players. Marty's main weaknesses were his penchant for playing "Martyball"--going conservative when we barely had a slim lead. Needed to keep the pedal on the metal. He also made a few poor game decisions. I still think he deserved another year at least, after taking the team to 14-2.

What is most important to you as a HC? Multiple choices allowed!

Someone who is honest, transparent, has some grit and metal in his personality - so he doesn't need to grow facial hair, a good teacher and communicator, does not want to be the O-coordinator or D-coordinator,
helps coaches scheme, interacts with all units, sits in on special teams meetings, attention to details and small things, is not wed to anyone scheme.

Values being physical and aggressive (not of the 4rth down variety) above all else, and is a good evaluator of talent.

NOrv, McCoy, Lynn & Staley couldn't move away from being glorified coordinators.

I wonder just how unhelpful Staley was in Herbert's game.
Probably tried to coach him up as if he knew the position better, and just fucked Herbert up.

              Problems:
              1. Stitch helped Herbie develop the long ball, along with other routes. But Lynn's horrible scheming and game decisions undermined Herbie's achievements.

              2. Lombo pushed Herbie into looking short for first read, with very few intermediate routes, and virtually no long routes in tree. So opposing D's stacked the box/flooded the flats and shut down out short pass O.

              3. Moore tried to incorporate more of a variety of routes, but our O-line woes and all those hits and sacks made Herbie panic more, threw more picks and incompletes, then he got injured.

              Solution:
We absolutely need to shore up our O line, even if it takes a few high picks to do it. Then I think our new OC will feel confident enough to dial up a variety of short, intermediate and long passes, keeping the opposing D on their heels...

To rack up wins in the NFL you must out coach the other coach. You must coach a team of men to execute flawlessly in 4th quarters. You must get get the right combination of coordinators. You much coach up young players.

Someone who knows how to win multiple Super Bowl in a row.

there are a few HC who have won 1 Super Bowl, but never got back…..is that due to great coordinator, GM, players?

Your poll only talks about philosophies to game planning...wide open offense..conservative defense...risk taker....but what is missing is CHARACTER. Boss Ross was great because of character...Marty...same...look at Harbaugh up at Baltimore...he was a special teams coach? But the character he has....he consistently can field a solid team and knows how to motivate men...similar to his brother...you can't get it out of a book or youtube like Staley tried to do...you have to somehow earn it thru your life experience. Its like pornography..hard to define..but you know it when you see it.

It will be hard to find.

Ways we now know are ineffective in building character:

                        A. Mimic slang of players when addressing them to appear cool, down home, real, ..... throw away adjective
                        B. Attend coaching clinics on character building
                        C. Soak it in by hanging around Steve Kerr for a week
                        D. Grow a beard (unless you're Fouts)
                        E. Synthetically try to create a family atmosphere in the locker room to show how you care
                        F. Distribute 'game balls' in locker room after victories
                        G. Be known for taking crazy reckless gambles that are without precedent
                        H. Pretend to take full responsibility while never admitting to making a mistake in judgement or planning
                        I. Fail to have direct conversations with starters on why you are benching them
                        J. Let problems fester in the locker room, then try to stamp them out ineffectually a year later by benching starters or waiving vets
                        K. Hire your barely competent mentor to a key position on the staff
                        L. Run after tumbling helmets of pouting stars and then immediately hand it back to them.
                        M. On all fours, get on your exercise mat and headphones before games and start doing thrusts with your pelvis so that Chief's planet can post it the next day.
                        N. Always lose close games against good teams
