So I say, no way he comes to this organization even though it’s exactly what it needs.

With a national championship at Michigan and his QB's last season then it becomes a "What more can I do there" thing! Also if Harbaugh was the HC in Los Angeles I'm pretty sure that would become must watch football and the stadium would be full of Chargers fans!

BECAUSE if we wait out the season and hire Moore starting next season we are just falling into the same trap as always, hiring the next hot OC and hoping he has the right stuff. First and foremost I hope the bolts get it together and go on a playoff run with Staley starting tonight, but if that doesn't happen YOU MAKE JIM HARBUAGH an offer he can't refuse and he's the next coach here starting next season, period ! This is the way to go because again hiring Moore in the offseason would be like a repeating nightmare that's been going on for years here with terrible results.

that's why a guy like Ed Dodds is so appealing.... if he is in fact a supreme talent evaluator.... would love to pair him w/DJ in the FO.
and back to Staley.... his personnel snafus are near endless, and yes he's had some good ones, but he is no personnel wizard.
not sure what Harbaugh's status is these days, and.... we def need a new HC.... hopefully Dean concurs.

Let me explain where exactly things have gone wrong for Telesco: Telesco learned from Bill Polian and Polian wanted to build a quick undersized defense that rushed the passer. The thought was they had peyton manning at QB and would be playing in front most of the time and teams would have to throw. So the emphasis on the defense was on 2 edge players that could really rush the passer, a 3 technique defensive tackle that could rush the passer, fast undersized linebackers that could chase and tackle. The corners did not have to be great coverage players because the defense would be in zone. The thought was most of the money would be spent on the offensive side of the ball (with the exception of the edge players) so the defensive secondary and linebackers could be "cheap" and as long as you could rush the passer things would be ok because the defense played zone. Basically, the defense was designed to be undersized. As long as you could play from in front it worked, but if the offense got into a game where they were struggling and couldn't play from in front the defense would then get pushed all over the field and couldn't stop the run because they're not built for it and couldn't stop the pass either because they didn't have the coverage guys for it. The year Peyton Manning sat out with the neck injury the Colts went 2-14!
That 2018 team we had was pretty much the perfect Polian prototype, but Brady exposed an additional weakness in the playoffs that season: You CAN'T play zone defense every snap against elite QBs or you will get carved up! We also see this annually with Buffalo. You have to be able to man up and cover people.
Basically, the entire Polian philosophy is flawed and doesn't work. Teams that consistently succeed with limited QB play take nearly a 100% opposite approach. They're BIG up front along the front 7 and are built to ALWAYS stop the run and keep you 1 dimensional. Look at the Steelers or Ravens. You won't find an undersized player or finesse player anywhere on those defenses. They would never entertain playing or drafting a Jerry Tillery or Tranquil.
Anyway, the Spanos' obviously recognized some of these flaws and saw what the Rams did in 2020 with their defense and saw what Fangio was doing with his defense in Denver so they went out and got Staley. The Fangio defense meshes well with some of that Polian philosophy - concede the run and don't give up big plays down the field. The problem is that approach has also quickly become outdated and DOES NOT WORK. Last year every team that ran that defense got destroyed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7quyQ-N_cYM
So, basically, everything regarding the construction of this team is currently broken. The scheme Staley was brought in to run quickly became outdated and doesn't stop the run, doesn't stop the pass, and the defense still gets pushed around all over the field. Kudos to Staley for recognizing the need to be a more physical team. The first thing he said when he got here is he wants to be a line of scrimmage football team. First he brings in Mack, Joseph-Day, and Austin Johnson. Then he brings in Kellen Moore who runs one of the most downhill rushing attacks in the NFL - downhill A gap oriented. The problem is those defensive tackle signings didn't move the needle, then JC Jackson gets hurt and Kenneth Murray fails to develop. So right now Staley is trying to piece things together with what he has to work with.
Right now I feel there is a bit of a power struggle between Staley and Telesco and I 100% side with Staley. At least he recognizes the problems of what needs to change.

Compare: Kyle Shanahan/John Lynch - Robert Saleh/Joe Douglas - Andy Reid/Brett Veach - Tom Telesco/Brandon Staley
Not fair because the first two organizations have football men - not family men - in the position of football operations. But the first three are given complete autonomy to work hand-in-glove and they do. Telesco + Staley are like two mis-matched pistons. And timing is off.
And John Spanos keeps pouring coolant into the crankcase.

The Spanos clan fails because they fail to follow the one Golden Rule of Business: Hire people smarter than yourself - in any designated area - and delegate. Hands-on + micromanaging are a child's concept of managing people.
