The thing is they had backups. Weeden and Cassel, while not starters, have played reasonably well in the recent past. The catch is that even Romo did not play that well with the Cowboys offense. Weeden even had two good games after he got released from the Cowboys. But the Cowboys, despite having a good OL, had only a decent receiver in Witten, and no WR who were any good (Dez Bryant was hurt all year). Then add in the poor play of their D (not many sacks, none of the turnovers from 2 years ago, missed tackles...).
Backup QB is not the biggest problem the Cowboys have. Not even close. They need to get a passing game, and that is regardless of who plays QB. They need a better D that gets the turnovers that were so key to their success 2 years ago. They need to develop a pass rush, and play better on ST. The popular thing is to look at QB and point to that being the thing that changed, but they did not play like the same team from their resent success.
