It’s crystal clear they aren’t contenders, only beating the pathetic Patriots by 6 points. They barely beat two other teams with garbage backup QB’s with barely any NFL experience.

Best thing they can do now, is lose out and get a real GM and HC. If they do that, they might be able to reconstruct a fundamentally good team and contend in 2-3 years. Otherwise, Herberts entire career will be Rivers 2.0
On the other hand, in order to get in the playoffs this year they would need to win all the rest of the teams on the schedule. Which means they will beat some of the teams you think of as good teams.

To me, that seems like a better thing to hope for, instead of hoping they lose out. I guess some people like to hope for the worst.

I don’t see how they improve DT, Center, CB(s), WR(s), TE, RB, replace Bosa, and other positions of need in one off season.

A roster that was loaded with Shiite over several years can’t be fixed in one offseason when it’s facing a cap crisis.
Signings, cuts, trades, and restructures (Pre-draft):

Sign Conner Williams (Cut Corey Linsley).
Trade Joey Bosa (3rd rounder), trade MW for a 4th rounder.
Restructure Keenan (2026) and Mack (2026).
Re-sign the ERFA's and Joshua Kelley. Andrew Farmer, Raheem Layne, Cameron Dicker, Foster Sarell.
44 on the active roster and 9 draft picks Pre-Draft. $26.5 million under the cap.

      Draft:
      12: R1 P12 CB Denzel Burke - Ohio State
      44: R2 P12 EDGE Bralen Trice - Washington
      76: R3 P12 TE Jaheim Bell - Florida State
      112: R4 P12 RB Devin Neal - Kansas
      148: R5 P12 S Rod Moore - Michigan
      187: R6 P12 C Jake Renfro - Wisconsin
      231: R7 P12 LB Jack Kiser - Notre Dame

Also picked up IDL Kris Jenkins (Bosa trade) and WR Roman Wilson (MW trade).

DT = health + younger players developing
C = yeah, big question mark
        CB/WR/TE = scheme
RB = blocking, so draft OL early and often (solves the C problem, plus SCHEME), and RBs are found all through the draft if you are any other team but the Chargers..
Bosa = who? Aren’t we kicking pass-rushing ass without him?

None of that is impossible with solid drafting and scheme change. Can the Chargers do it? Hard telling, but recent history would suggest No w/o front office/coaching changes.

This. A few more wins and the Spanos goofs may decide they don't really need a new coach and GM. Rinse & repeat. I'm tired of this same old crap, accepting mediocrity. If Spanos had any guts he would fire them both right now. Who would be the interim coaches? Who cares! Maybe someone will surprise us, maybe not. Any change would be better than what we have, this team is the laughing stock of the league. Try playing guys that don't get to play very much, evaluate the talent that we do have. Send a signal to everyone that your spot is not guaranteed. This season is done, folks, but that doesn't mean we have to give up on our team. This team can be turned around by next year, cap problems and all, if something radical is done. Smokey was right, accepting the status quo is accepting mediocrity.

What's going to happen is the Chargers will win 2-3 more games. It won't be enough to make the playoffs, but it will be enough for the Spanoses to decided Telesco and Staley deserve one more season.

Pretty remarkable this team will be 42M over the cap in 2024, only NO and BUF are in worse shape, for the roster they have on the field, Bust JCJ is $22M of that. Basically 2 of Bosa, Allen, Mack and Williams have to go via trade or cut to create ~ $20M in space.

Based on health recently , likely Bosa and Williams.

Get a draft pick from the 49ers for Bosa in the off-season so he can join his brother and spend half the season on IR.

I’ll take 2 years for serious contenders, but they can be competitive next year with the right GM and right coaching staff.

The Chargers biggest problems right now:

                    1) Lack of talent @CB. The pass defense has been terrible. We have a pass-rush. We are better vs the run.
                    2) Pass coverage scheme. The soft zone vs Chiefs and Dolphins was inexcusible.
                    3) OL blocking scheme. Can't run. Can't pick up blitzes.
                    4) Injuries: MW, Palmer, Linsley. I don't even include Bosa... because we look fine without him.
                    5) 2024 cap.

                    Solutions:

                    1) Cut /trade the injured: Linsley, MW, and Bosa. Get what you can for them... even if it only amounts to mid-round picks. It's the cap.
                    2) Replace the most important piece: Center. FA centers have worked out much better than draft picks. Do not waste any more of Herbert's time on a rookie who may/may not develop.
                    3) Draft well: Your starters for next year are ASJ, Ja'Sir, and Leonard. You would have to be insane to walk into next year without a better CB (maybe 2). RB, TE, and WR depth will have to be addressed. A 3rd edge-rusher would be smart. An IDL would also be smart.
                    4) Better head coach. But... if you don't improve @CB, it won't matter who you have @coach.

Have to assume that Linsley, with an unspecified heart problem, is non-tradable. And he's under contract through 2025. It's too bad, because he holds the OL together.
