When the chargers signed Linsley, they put in language that gives the team an out after year two…they couldn’t have done that without Linsley’s approval, this is not about contract length or money, Linsley himself might be getting ready to walk away…guys like Linsley take so much pride in what they do that when they feel they can no longer produce to their usual standard anymore, they have no issues walking away from money…the anti-rapistburger type guys…

He has no guaranteed money after this year, but there is still the dead cap from the signing bonus. In any case, he is still playing at a very high level when on the field so I'm not sure he walks away any time soon.

Sarell didn't look too bad in the preseason...

Yep...at Linsley's age (31), as a 9-year vet, many players start getting injured more often...Bolts were smart to insert that out after this season:

Linsley was already having chronic back issues in green bay, if he can and wants to continue playing, I’m all for it! The guy is a phenomenal center still, but can he stay on the field going forward?

The prudent thing would be to plan ahead via the draft. Perhaps a guard to replace zion and slide zion over when or if linsley get’s hurt OR perhaps draft a center to learn behind Linsley…clapp is not a good enough backup…

one thing is clear to me, we can do a lot better than norton, clapp, and jaimes as our primary back ups on O-line…

IMO, sarrell is better than norton right now, I’m not sure that is saying much tho…norton in 2020 tho? No, in 2020 norton was a decent backup player and much better than he is now, norton had a really nice game against crosby in 2020, his legs were healthier and his mobility was more fluid, his body has taken a pounding since 2020 and it shows…

that 7.8mil cap hit sounds high but the cap savings more than pays for it, you stand to gain 2.5mil in cap net…is it worth cutting Linsley for 2.5 mil total cap net savings, no, it’s not…but I’m convinced that out was put there because corey himself was going to evaluate himself after two years to see if he wanted to continue playing…in his signing day interview he talked about this when he was asked about the length of the contract…it sounded down to earth and realistic, not like the nonsense russell wilson was saying in denver when he signed…corey sounded like a player that understands the end is near…it will not surprise me if he retires and the chargers don’t even have a say in any of it…

bottom line, whether the chargers move on from linsley or linsley himself walks away or if he decides to stick around for another couple of years, it doesn’t worry me as much knowing how solid zion looked at center at the senior bowl…we have a fantastic player available to play the position no matter what happens…

if linsley stays fieler might become a cap casualty, I just can’t imagine the chargers sitting salyer because he’s already better than fieler…

Linsley >> Feiler - its not close imo. Linsley missed one game last year, missed one game this year. this conversation has turned bizarre.

^This. We need to constantly add talent to the lines as quality depth and future starters.

The Linsley retirement prediction debate has very little to do with this thread - I’m perplexed. Isn’t there a roster-build thread somewhere? Unless the sage counselors here think he’s going to retire before Monday?

Where drafting Ricky Stromberg in the 2nd comes into play. He’s the next Creed Humphrey and Josh Meyers.

                          Yes...back to this game...

It has all the makings of a letdown. Division game, wounded opponent, they had 10 days rest after an embarrassing loss and ready to bounce back, etc etc.

That being said, it's also a great opportunity for Staley and this team to take another step in their development: can they soundly beat a team that, on paper, they should? Or do they lose? Or do they barely get by?

Outside of the Chiefs and Bills in the AFC...I think everyone is about on the same playing field this year. A bunch of pretty average teams.
