Mike Williams, who had seven catches for 120 yards, was open in single coverage on a deep ball on third-and-5 on the second possession of the second half, and Herbert overthrew him. for a second there, I thought we weren't meeting expectations.
So long as Lombo isn't responsible for ALL second half stalls, I guess we're good.
and there's an actual article that in a way, shows this right?
Good. Articles are good.

To say Lombo went conservative in the 2nd half are just close minded and waiting for a reason to blame him.

I'm crossing my fingers on Pipkins... there are still some plays where he misses his target (mostly run blocks on the move... hitting moving targets).
Right now Matt Feiler is the weak link (surprisingly). Salyer seems destined to eventually replace Feiler.
The player we don't mention is Corey Linsley. We are so much better with him in the lineup.
Is hoping for good health (next 3 years) too much to hope for...? Or should we be planning on drafting/developing a center in the next draft...?

Just a random thought overall. I really want Staley to relinquish play calling duty, bring in an experienced DC like Fangio to call plays.
The reason why, is look a what Sean McDermott has done in Buffalo. While he is very involved in the players on D and game plan. Leslie Frazier is a experienced and successful DC in this league for a long time calling plays for their D.
Shoot, I’d almost give Jay Rodgers a shot at DC. Been in this type of system for a long time. I’m just not really sure what Renaldo Hill is even doing or what he has to offer.
I believe this is a move that needs to happen in the offseason for this D to really blossom. But it will only happen if Staley sets his ego aside.

Jay Rodgers would be great. He was getting strong consideration by other teams with new HC to become a DC when he joined the Chargers. But I think Staley would give it up to Hill and I just am not sure what to make of that guy. He is the Eric Bienemy of defense (not fair?) except the defense is not that great like Reid's offense is.
Feiler looks to me like something is going on with him mentally. I wonder if something is happening in his personal life? A guy with his experience just doesn't suddenly whiff on simple blocks or start leaning and getting off balance on pass sets.
TGLike, how am I a traitor? Your team are traitors.

The buck stops with coaching. When I see the offense improving in the second half, I’ll start believing Lombardi can figure out opposing defense weaknesses as the game progresses and exploits them. As of now it looks like the opposite.

With Bosa out for the majority of the season, would you trade for a veteran edge rusher? Mack, bless him, has 5 sacks, one off the league lead held by the brother of Joey. But Rumph is not going to provide enough of a threat on the other side to keep defenses honest against Mack until/if Bosa can return. I don't know if Van Noy is going to provide that either. The guy who Tenn waived and the Chargers picked up, Derrek Tuszka, is an unknown.
The Texans signed Jerry Hughes to a two year contract this season. He's been in the league since 2010, is 34, and played for Buff for nine seasons through 2021. His production decline quite a bit in 2021, but he has four sacks already this season - 2 each v. the Colts and Broncos. He didn't do much against the Chargers' OL on Sunday.
The Texans are going nowhere this year and look to be very possibly the worst team in the league. I wonder if they'd be open to trading Hughes for a low-round pick next season. The Chargers' depth at edge was a concern going into this season, and now they are without Bosa for the majority of the season. One way to counter the lack of talent opposite Mack is to have a surplus of bodies they can rotate in and out to keep guys fresh and have that advantage.

I think that this defense is evolving and Staley and this GM and staff are solidifying this defense, slowly. But the defense is still too inconsistent. Texans game - One thing I noticed in the Houston game was the pre-snap A gap blitzes from the ILB positions, Kenneth Murray is becoming more and more frequent in these, and better, in pre-snap disruptions. Love that. Plus, they demonstrated the safety blitzes are effective as well in the Week 1 Raider game when Derwin sacked Carr. Next, I hope to see corner blitzes emerge. Once Staley has those play calls in his arsenal, the opposing QB isn't going to know where the pressure is coming from.
I believe that to understand Renaldo Hill and Staley's relationship, the two are simply on the same page when it comes to advanced conceptualizing of defensive concepts. They are each others' muse and I think if you are patient, Charger fans will see the fruits of that relationship. Staley has told that story of he and Hill presenting concepts to each other when they were unit coaches. They relate in a big way.
If you want to imagine the Charger defense in Year Three, picture Roquan Smith as the LB as Smith plans to play out the final season of his rookie contract in Chicago and hit free agency in March.
