Think we're all aware that Kenny needed to make this solo tackle, and something that is within the skillset of a 1st Round LBer. Kenny blew it, of course. It's the talent lacking in Staley's scheme as well.
He didn’t really come close to tackling him on that play. Didn’t even slow him up. It was odd.

was bizarre tackle attempt for sure.

on the flip side, Put Ekeler in this situation and he is getting that TD.

        It was Kenny being Kenny.

Staley has one-upped Dale Lindsey’s “Blue Screen of Death” Chargers defense from 2002. That’s the worst Chargers defense I’ve ever seen. Until now.

NFL offenses seek to force defenses to defend vertically and horizontally.

Players like Joey and JC make the field smaller.

Defensive linemen must have anchor, diagnose, and lateral mobiĺity.

K9/Nasir have developed at a snails pace, with a realistic goal of becoming consistently adequate at best.

Concepts that have worked not just @ LAR, but also @ CHI and DEN, can succeed @ LAC too.
In 2022, even without the vital Joey, we were OK except for gash plays, and that would have been standard successful StaleyD concepts.

Decimation at DT, with AJ/Covington/Tito injuries, worsened our predicament.

Of course Staley understands cycles of football, need for constant adjustments.

Transition from gusD personnel and player development remain factors.

Defenses commonly go from very bad to pretty good, once all is settled.

Then management typically gets fed up with scoring offense, and changes out entire staffs.
            Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

It's been pitiful, at best. And continues to be. Jacobs is going to run wild this Sunday, and there is nothing the Chargers can do to stop it.

Some of this is understandable when you factor the three DT’s and Bosa not playing.

BUT…..here’s why Telesco/Spanos can’t use the injury card as an excuse.

They had a chance to replenish the DT losses with quality free agents like the Eagles did with Joseph and Suh and THEY DIDN’T.

Injuries are common, frequent, and to be expected in the NFL. It’s not an EXCUSE. A competent owner makes sure he has a GM that has quality backups or goes out and gets them when needed.

Instead, we suffer the same fate every year and use the injury excuse to explain failure. Year after year after year. It’s always the same.

This is my biggest issue with Staley. "His" scheme is a major flaw. A light box will never work, because you need to stop the run 1st. All great defenses stop the run.

I agree about the DT situation but even more so - the WR situation during the bye when Allen, Williams and Palmer all had various issues from a health perspective. Against the Niners, Herbert didn't have a chance with that receiver group.

^ This. Instead of signing quality or even competent backups, TT habitually scrapes the very bottom of the FA barrel...whether in off season, when more talent is available, or mid-season, when only the JAG dregs are left...remember, I'm talking about BACKUPS...he did make some good signings for our starters...but u just KNOW that injuries will happen, hence the need for quality depth...

Whether it is scheme or players, I blame Staley. For almost 2 years now this run defense has been horrific. He blames in on gap control, crack replace, contain, setting the edge, injuries, etc. But bottom line he has had all kinds of time to fix the run defense. He is supposed to be a genius who assesses players and highlights their talent If this is true, find a way to highlight the talent of the guys he has and stop the run. A good coach gets this fixed, regardless of the root cause. Chargers will go nowhere until its fixed.

Herbert is still hurt. He is throwing everything side arm, even his warmups on the sidelines. He was never a side arm thrower until the ribs. It is why he gets so many balls batted down. No one seems to want to acknowledge it but his release point and throwing motion severely impacted by his ribs.
