And the article seemed to imply that the extension could actually give the team MORE money to play with this off-season.

The Chargers have been this off-season's biggest news maker in the NFL - by far - if you ask me:

    1) The move to LA
    2) Rivers' contract
    3) The Rivers Trade
    4) Gates wanting LESS playing time
    5) Weddle's contract

Hardly a day has gone by in March/April when SOMETHING Charger-related hasn't been front and center.
Doesn't McGuire handle the contracts anyway?

Weddle doesn't like not being a priority I guess, it makes him feel disrespected.

Skipping voluntary workouts when you are not happy isn't a big deal especially in this situation.
I guess the only thing that bothers me is the way that the Chargers are reportedly handling it - would it really take much effort to let his agent know they will get back to him after the draft? Of course, we only hear what they want us to hear so who knows what is really happening.

The Team has stated publicly they want both Weddle and Rivers back.
        Go Rivers!

And while I think that is true, statements to media are not always the most accurate information out there.

Now in his 36th NFL season and 26th with the Chargers, Ed McGuire has worked his way up the football operations staff with the Chargers since joining the team in 1998. Named Executive Vice President of Football Administration/Player Finance in January 201

The chargers don't give big extensions to players early in the year. They have done most of the big money extensions right before, or during TC. I expect that moves up some now that rookies are all pretty much signed by the time the 1st minicamp comes up, which is not that far away.

Moves made prior to FA are all about forcing under performing players to take it or leave it, so that teams can free up money for the new league year. We have redone a lot of those deals in the past, but Weddle and Rivers are not those types of players.

I dont understand what Weddle is whining about. Telesco said that after the draft, doing extensions is his next step. They are busy with FA'cy(or was) the draft, evals, visits, and such so why should he expect to be a #1 priority right now? It will come, just wait till things slow down. For fans i think the Rivers situtaion seems more dire but it has to be something on their minds as well....if there is any truth to him being traded, which i dont buy.

Maybe he is upset that they mentioned wanting to extend Rivers and havent mentioned him yet?

weddle should pull a rivers and say he'll just play out his contract and refuse to sign an extension before that happens. and also say he refuses to move his family to la.

When a vet and pro who conducts themselves as Weddle has through the years, I expect more from him. I also would not be thrilled with giving a Safety at his age a huge contract or market level contract for more than a year. Why offer a contract that could create dead cap space due to the normal aging process?

I love Weddle, but I do not think we should bend over to pay him to retire in LA, or San Diego

Could agents of players who think we will move into a bigger market be, claim staking on future cap space for their named players now???
                        Go Rivers!

So which one is it? Long before the draft or after the draft and before training camp?
