It's always about the cycles of football. It would be naive to think Staley did not know this was coming--the offensive backlash to Fangio things.
Now, Staley's toolbox will soon have Joey setting the EDGE, Derwin doing all sorts of wrinkles, and even Woods eventually providing a Single High look.
Ignore the nay sayers, Wood sees the forest for the trees … the micro-dot inspectors will soon look up from defect-seeking magnifying glasses and find us out front … again
In case things go horribly wrong Payton is apparently joining forces with Fangio as his DC for his return to coaching next season. Would be seemless
This was in a SI article a few days ago about coaching:
Sean Payton obviously looms over all of this. However, the sense I’ve gotten in two recent conversations with folks in the coaching industry is that there could be a little bit of sticker shock once teams realize they will have to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million, and work out trade compensation for the Saints (who still retain his contractual rights) and prepare to fork over a big percentage of organizational power. It cost the Buccaneers two first-round picks, two second-round picks and $8 million per year to lure Jon Gruden out of Oakland in 2002. That would likely be the starting point for Payton. Chances are, if it’s going to happen, we may get wind of it soon, as legitimate trade discussions would likely have to ramp up.
If we make the playoffs there’s no chance he gets fired and they may not do it even if we miss the playoffs. But if they collapse down the stretch a second straight year they shouldn’t hesitate to pull the plug
I would agree with this, particularly if the D continues playing at its current level, with James (& perhaps Bosa) returning.
When Staley first came here, he promised to style a defense that took advantage of each player's unique skill set.
Obviously, not easy (if not impossible) to do; but still something to strive towards.
What we saw instead was a defense shaped around a few (or one) stars.
Does anyone remember Staley publicly chiding Adderley in training camp, siding with Derwin?
Does anyone remember Jalen Ramsey, from 3 years ago, complementing Staley about being used in all these different roles?
At the time, Ramsey said something about how he always wanted to be deployed in such a fashion.
Ramsey and Derwin are mates, they talk a lot during the offseason. You don't think Derwin's mind swelled up listening to his buddy?
Staley opted to be on good terms with his star: Derwin, coming out of college, was the alpha male of alpha males.
He's a locker room difference maker. Staley, a newbie and outsider, chose to placate Derwin.
It happens all the time to young head coaches.
Belichick doesn't have to do it: any player on Belichick's D is expendable.
Hopefully, Derwin sees the light.
and you thought this would be an anti- Staley rant.
