Flowers play has seemed to drop off a lot lately. Not sure if he is hurt or just not playing as good as when he got back. Wright seems to be the guy that teams target frequently, though he seems to have held up decently. The problem is all three of the corners talked about have missed time and we will definitely need quality depth behind them so I would not be opposed to having both Flowers and Wright back. Gilchrist is just a guy. Having said that, IMO he is better than Addae is by a long shot in the coverage area. Actually, the only thing Addae can do is launch himself at people and hope for a big hit. With his small frame he won't last long doing that.

I think you left out the word "not"? And, if so, that's my take as well.

If Gilchrist is let go and we are in need of a project at SS (again) Chris Davis may get a look.

Gilchrist leaves a lot to be desired as a starting S, but seems to fit better as nickel and has a knack for big plays this year down near the goal line when their backs are to the wall. Its just 1 of those things where the team prioritizes elsewhere since they have a fallback option with starting experience so they never make a serious effort to upgrade. Just like when we had Steve Gregory as the default starter year after year and we only take flyers on guys with questionable character or injury history and see if they stick. I'm tired of the Ellison, Sanders, Taylor type failures.

Yes, Gilchrest is a poor-man's Weddle. Slot receiver specialist.
              Prediction:
              Correct: Chargers CI fails miserably.
Fail: Team stays in San Diego until their lease runs out in 2020. (without getting new deal done by then) .
Sig Bet WIN: The Chargers will file for relocation on January 15.

I agree with everything you've said, but I think that keeping Gilchrist is just not a priority to our FO. Now, if he makes it easy, sure they may bring him back but my gut tells me he's gonna slip through the cracks and be with another team next year.

The thing is that the slot DB is the 11th starter on D, so it is worth a little bit to try and keep him. He is not a good deep S, playing off the line and reading and then coming up to react, but he is a good slot player, or in the box type of S. He can run with most WR, which is not something that most S can do.

The thing that has cost him some money this year is that his tackling, while it has gotten better, it still has him missing some key tackles now and again. He also is a bit slow to read and react. There are times he can get fooled or is just a couple of step slow (bubble screens), and the difference in those steps makes all the difference. He is worth bringing back, but I wouldn't be all that surprised to see a team throw a chunk of cash at him, especially if they need speed at S.

The problem right now is that Verrett, Addae, and Wright are all guys who have missed a fair amount of time. I can see letting Wright and Gilchrist go if someone else throws money at them. They aren't playing well enough to justify a huge contract, but then you have to figure in that you are paid for you potential to perform at a high level the next couple of years too. Gilchrist will get paid some for the virtue that he is ready to play every week> Gilchrist plays in the paint and battles it out with TE and gets knocked around in the running game, yet still is healthy.

Wright has played pretty well this year. Maybe I am mistaken, but he tends to play badly when the pass rush is poor, so how much of that failing is that he is human compared to being a bad player. Again, I think he is worth bringing back, but it has to be at the right price, and if I had to pick, I would rather have Gilchrist as my Nickle DB, then Wright as my outside CB.
