Something to think about, what if Jones takes over Eddie Royals spot as 3rd WR, only we go to a lot more 2 TE sets. We haven't invested a lot of money in our TE, but it was clearly a disappointment that both Johnson and Green didn't get more playing time at TE last year. And the only way they get to play more playing time for them is if we go 2 TE, since Gates, while sliding, is still one of the better TE.

Tutu still would have a place, since Jones would really be taking the roster spot of Royal, and it would be getting that fairly massive salary off the books (he was getting $5 mill per last season, http://overthecap.com/player/eddie-royal/448/). Royal was really overpaid as a 3rd WR. And as much as I like Eddie, it is a tough option to let developing players site on the bench to force a guy with a high salary sit on the bench. It was a tough option to put guys on the field over Eddie.

I sincerely hope this is a ST signing primarily, and that he is a backup plan at WR.....not our primary slot guy.

I believe they have agreed ona contract, which can't be officially signed until March 10. You can negotiate deals with FA, but they can't be signed until then. That is my understanding anyway...could be wrong.

Veterans who are cut can be signed before the start of FA.
Players who's contracts are up have to wait till the 10th.

FWIW, in the link posted in the 1090 interview with Jones, he specifically mentioned the role he has been asked to play is as the 6th WR and KR/PR. I thought it was interesting that he could have said off the bench, or depth WR or something, but he specifically said 6th WR. Allen, Floyd, Royal, Tutu, Jones, Inman(?)... There would seem to be room for all of them, although I wouldn't rule out us trying to upgrade any of the spots besides probably Tutu(ST) and Allen.

I would like to see Floyd and Allen pretty much split time, and work more to get our TE on the field more. But Royal is good enough that he makes that tough if we start to fall behind.
