I think we should do away with compensatory picks altogether. And if they're going to keep them, then they need transparency. None of this "mysterious formula that not even those in the know know" bullshit. Teams should only have 7 picks, plus or minus any traded picks.

If the FA loss thing has to be really lopsided, then you MIGHT get a 3rd round pick.
IMHO, you don't play games in terms of trying to get comp picks. You sign or let walk who you do to fit the salary cap space, and if you get an extra pick, great. If not, it really isn't going to help your losses. They are lower round picks to begin with, and you don't get that many per year. They would be more valuable if you can package them as part of a trade, but that isn't allowed, which minimizes the impact of them.
