2024 Chargers Draft Superthread - Prospect Discussion - Draft Has Started

[Jack Burton]

Keon Coleman seems to be the favorite whipping boy of pundits this year...they all feel let down, I think...expected a leap this year, didnt see it...mid 40...but he has hops, and a nice frame...Mike Williams light without the production. If you can coach up his run blocking, he can be a 50/50 ball, and redzone specialist...IF we are seeing that as a big enough need for a day 2 pick...I just like a lot of receivers more...

Ricky Pearsall shouldnt be slept on...but in this crazy wr draft, he is. Wilson is really solid, a little small, but would thrive as a pro slot. Rice is a very physical receiver who seems to fit our scheme well.

Burton is the real sleeper for me...literally...I know next to nothing about him, lol...guess I got another guy to watch!

I think the Chargers with all their Quarterback talk protect the Quarterback will draft

Joe Alt at 5 tackle Notre Dame.

I don’t know if he can play right tackle but he will be the pick. I don’t think they’ll draft Malik Nabers

Shit it might even be Tony Fontou at 5.

I think Cooper Dejuan will be a pick.

And I think they will pick Brandon Rice. That’s my pick and I’m sticking to it.

I think the Jets draft Brock Bowers at 10.

I have steadily said I am open to a trade down for a tackle if that is the inevitability with Harbaugh and Hortiz....Fuaga, Latham, Fashanu, Fautanu etc but remain adamant i do not want to draft Joe Alt at #5 over the likes of Harrison, Nabers, Odunze.

This article out today on ESPN of the players they have first round grades on and their NFL comparables illustrates why I feel the way I do. Basiclaly I do not want to pass on elite pass catching talents with the hole at that position on our roster for a tackle that is a good, soild tackle prospect but not elite tackle prospect. A top 5 pick ina loaded draft is too rich for a right tackle and to rich for Joe Alt. As I have said this player is not an Ogden, not a Joe Thomas, or a Sewell in recent drafts. The comparable here is the Giants Andrew Thomas...a solid NFL tackle. I think Alt will be a good NFL tackle but these 3 WRS all could be elite.

This article sums it up for me. I dont want to pass on the next J'marr Chase, AJ Green for an Andrew Thomas. Not at #5. If it has to be a tackle I sincerely hope it is a trade down.

Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State (No. 2)

Comp: A.J. Green

Harrison -- the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison Sr. -- has rare traits, including great size (6-foot-4, 209 pounds), body control, agility and flexibility, along with the fastest hands this side of Tyreek Hill. You don't often see big wide receivers show the flexibility and body control that Harrison does in order to get low to snag ground balls. And he's consistently making plays that show off an elite catch radius. He accumulated 2,474 receiving yards and 28 TDs over the past two seasons, despite defenses knowing the ball is going his way.

Rome Odunze, Washington (No. 3)

Comp: Ja'Marr Chase

Odunze is a physical, aggressive player when the ball is in his hands, and he sheds defenders with his 6-foot-3, 212-pound frame. Odunze combined for 167 catches, 2,785 yards and 20 touchdowns over the past two seasons while making a name for himself as a back shoulder fade specialist. His toughness pre- and post-catch is fantastic, and his ability to consistently beat man coverage and dominate on 50-50 balls is why he gets the Chase comp.

Malik Nabers, LSU (No. 4)

Comp: Stefon Diggs

He's the best after-the-catch receiver in the draft class. The 6-foot, 199-pound Nabers averaged 18 yards per catch on 86 grabs last season, with 6.8 coming after the catch. He also turned in 14 touchdowns and 1,546 yards in a breakout season. Nabers' start-stop quicks are high-end, and his field vision to find running lanes with the ball in his hands is special. I also love that over the past two seasons he had a drop rate of just 3.1%. Nabers is sure-handed, fast, explosive and ready to be an NFL WR1.

Joe Alt, Notre Dame (No. 6)

Comp: Andrew Thomas

The son of Chiefs' Hall of Famer John Alt, the younger Alt is a masterful technician with just two sacks allowed in the past two seasons. At 6-foot-9 and 321 pounds, he dominates defenders with his length and grip strength. Once he's locked on, defenders are best to just wait for the whistle. Alt doesn't have the flashy agility of other tackle prospects, but his power and technique are NFL-ready.

This is the guy who predicted before the 2020 NFL draft that Justin Herbert was going to be the NFL's next big bust. Watch it accordingly. He says Harrison Jr. and Nabers are completely different types of receivers. Harrison is more polished and can make plays at every level. As the X receiver he plays on the line, and he beats press coverage the way an elite pass rusher beats OL. Nabers is a slot guy - he couldn't beat press coverage at X - and is much more raw in terms of technique, but his athletic ability is off the charts.

if I'm a GM, I gotta factor in susceptibility to injury, and thinkin' the both of Brock 'n Malik are more susceptible to injury than the other two pass catchers ??

also, when it comes to intangibles, gotta be a bit wary of Nabers ?? don't mind his celebrating, as shows he's invested in the game, and.... dunno, his mindset makes me a bit uneasy....

and gonna give Odunze the mindset nod, and dude isn't short of quix.... he can move some too.... have a feelin' he might be the best pick outta the pass catchers ??

and Harrison's QB didn't rate so well, albeit don't know how much he was responsible for Marvin's lower production than Nabers/Odunze ??

still leaning trade down/RT, and.... if I'm the GM, think I'd play it safer than not w/Odunze ?? he's got the production, the mindset/intangibles.... what else ??

They had at LT in 2015 the chronically injured Eugene Monroe and a 2nd year rookie free agent, James Hurst, who started 8 games for them.
It was a screaming need and they had 2 future pro bowlers to select from ..... BPA met need.

They draft J.J. McCarthy at #3 and still have picks #5, #9, #34 & #37.
They get Herbert's contract off the books and reset with a rookie QB whom Harbaugh won the National Championship with.

I don't know what to say. I think Minnesota would give us a ton of draft picks like two firsts this year plus a first next year and maybe another first the year after for Herbert. So we gut the entire offense this year and pretty much guarantee no playoffs this year no matter what for a question mark QB on the NFL level. My head hurts with this level of folly and would really question the entire Charger organization if done this way.
