Neither are perfect. Any other #17 draft pick wouldn't see the field more than 50% of the time... they'd be back-ups.
Edge @#17 made sense before Mack was signed.
CB @ #17 made sense before JC Jackson was signed.
WR Jameson made sense @#17 before he tore up his knee and Mike Williams was re-signed.

Those before-mentioned positions are all targets (depth) in rounds 3-5 now.
Any RT taken rounds 1-3 will be a big upgrade over what we have now (Norton/Pipkins).

Any OT free agent better than Penning/Raimann is going to cost $10+ million.
Get a solid veteran RG ($2-4 million) and put him next to your rookie 1st round OT (like we did last year).

BTW... even if Jameson is ahead of schedule (back by Mid-September)... he will miss all of training camp.
Mike Williams dealt with an early injury... and ended up with 54 catches/760 yards in his 1st two years combined. And our WR corps was much thinner then.

        Nutty's WR targets this draft:

        Christian Watson... 3rd/4th round
        Velus Smith... 4th round
        Danny Gray... 4th round
        Kyle Philips... 4th round

Truly, it seems like there are fewer and fewer reasons to draft 'developmental' players, because by the time they're ready to contribute on any meaningful level, their rookie contract (4 years) has expired.

If Jameson's rehab schedule translates to halving his availability during his rookie season, that counts for something, and will be reflected by the slot in which he turns out to be drafted. So, yes. He could easily slide on draft day.

Luckily for the Chargers, they aren't COMPELLED to select a right tackle at #17.

If "the right guy" isn't there, there are other directions they can go that will significantly improve the team.

IMO, the Chargers have the LUXURY of being able to select a RT at #17. Telesco and Staley have fallback plans that they are at least *publicly* indicating they're comfortable with, meaning Pipkins. (And I've heard some podcasters VOW that Telesco and Staley believe in Pipkins, as shocking as that might seem.)

Somebody of Top 10 value is very likely to slip to #17, and-- unless it's a QB-- *that* is who the Chargers will select. Could be a receiver... or a Front 7 defender... or very possibly a right tackle.

            Otherwise...

If it's a QB? There's likely to be a team desperate enough to trade up for the guy, and it's the kind of scenario where Tom Telesco would trade down and acquire a Day 2 pick, to compensate for the one spent on Khalil Mack.

I don't think Penning or Raimann will beat out Pipkins year 1. They are both significantly behind him in their development. They would likely start year 2 after Pipkins gets a contract elsewhere.

                When did Pipkins develop...?

Think Nutty was referring to Velus Jones, not Smith. Would be a steal in the 4th. Totally misused at USC. Broke out at Tennessee. Blazed 4.32 at the combine. Would be a perfect Andre Roberts replacement. Returns punts and kickoffs.

LOL! Yes, Jones... too many names swirling around.

You know who I'd really like to get: Abraham Raimann, Jameson Burkes, and Roger McDuffie....

                      :More Q Please:
