Report: Chargers give Melvin Gordon permission to seek trade

The Los Angeles Chargers apparently seem ready to move on from Melvin Gordon. The Chargers have given Gordon and his representatives permission to seek a trade, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday. This would allow Gordon’s agent to call around and see what teams have interest in the running back and what they potentially would be willing to give up in a trade. More importantly, it allows Gordon’s reps the chance to find out what teams are willing to pay Gordon the kind of money he is seeking. This step is not too surprising. The two sides seemed far apart in contract talks, indicating the holdout would likely continue into the season. The 26-year-old running back is set to earn $5.6 million in the final year of his rookie contract this season. He would like more money than that and was unlikely to receive it from the Chargers. The Chargers are likely to use a combination of Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson at running back this season.
