The team has agreed to a one-year deal with the future HoF TE. IT’S HAPPENING!
The Chargers announced they have reached an agreement on a one-year deal with TE Antonio Gates just minutes before NFL teams are supposed to have all of their waiver claims submitted to the league’s office. After a long offseason of back-and-forth debates on whether or not the team will re-sign Gates following the loss of Hunter Henry for the season, we finally have our answer.
The argument for signing Gates only gained more and more support following a preseason that saw the Chargers kick the tires on a number of UDFA tight ends. After all four preseason contests, not one TE was able to make a good enough impression on the staff other than veteran Virgil Green and last year’s UDFA pick-up, Sean Culkin.
Regardless if you think Gates has missed a step over the last few seasons, he brings a welcomed veteran presence to the locker room and gives Rivers another target he can have complete and utter confidence in.
