Chargers Sign Former Broncos TE Virgil Green to Three-Year Deal

The former Broncos blocking tight end stays in the AFC West. The Los Angeles Chargers have signed former Denver Broncos tight end Virgil Green to a three-year deal. Green’s ability as a blocker should allow the Chargers to free up Hunter Henry to spend more time running routes and less time staying in to block, which pending the terms of this deal, should make this signing a success.
NFL Insider Adam Caplan reports via Twitter: Virgil Green is not a terribly exciting player, but he is a competent receiver and a quality blocker. He should represent an improvement over the likes of Sean McGrath and could potentially signal the end of Antonio Gates’ tenure with the team. There is no guarantee that this signing rules out Gates returning since they effectively play different positions given their relative strengths and weaknesses, but just from a roster construction standpoint, this move has to reduce the odds of the Hall of Famer coming back for 2018.
