Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn is taking over a team that has won a combined nine games over the last two seasons. The Chargers play in arguably the toughest division in the National Football League. They are transitioning from an odd front to an even front in their base defense. And they are looking to have new starters at as many as four positions along the offensive line.
That would suggest a team that has relatively low expectations. But the Chargers, in their first season in Carson, are not a team that has low expectations. Their roster has been ranked as the 8th best in the NFL (though 5th in the AFC and 2nd in the division). Philip Rivers is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram form arguably the best pass rushing duo in the league. Jason Verrett and Casey Hayward (if they stay healthy) could be the best cornerback duo in the NFL. Melvin Gordon is coming off a breakout season and will have the best interior offensive line the Chargers have had in year
